Kadınlar için tüm dünyada demokratik kazanımlar toplumsal mücadelelerle sağlanmıştır.
20. yüzyılın başlarında Birleşik Krallık ve ABD de kadınların seçme ve seçilme hakkını savunan, radikal kadın hakları savunucuları süfrajet olarak nitelendirilmiştir.
1913’te Emily Davison’un protesto amacıyla kendini, düzenlenen bir at yarışında Birleşik Krallık Hükümdarı V. George ’un atının önüne atarak ölmesiyle Süfrajet Hareketi kadın mücadelesinin mihenk taşı olmuştur..Uzun ve zorlu mücadelenin sonucunda 1920 yılında ABD’de, 1928 yılında ise İngiltere’de kadınların oy hakkını elde etmesi sağlanmıştır.
Atatürk sayesinde Türk kadınının pek çok ülkeden daha önce seçme ve seçilme hakkını kazanması , eşitlikçi bir yaşam sürmesinin yolunu açmıştır.
Bugün Dünya Kadınlar Koşusu Atatürk’ün Türk Kadınlarına vermiş olduğu haklara teşekkür için ve Sufrajet Kadınları anısına düzenlenmektedir.

Democratic gains for women around the world have been achieved through social struggles. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the U.K and the U.S.A activists who defended women’s right to vote and be elected , were called
Suffragettes. In 1913, the Suffragette Movement became a milestone in the fight for women’s rights when Emily Davison threw herself in front of King George V’s horse during a horse race as a form of protest and lost her life.
As a result of long and difficult struggles, women in the United States gained the right to vote in 1920, and women in the United Kingdom in 1928. Thanks to Atatürk, Turkish women gained the right to vote and be elected even before many countries in the world, paving the way for a more just, equal, and participatory society for all individuals.
Today, the International Women’s Race organized in memory of the Suffragette women and to express gratitude for the rights granted to Turkish women by Atatürk.
Salute to all the Suffragettes who fought for freedom and equality.
